Meet the Artist John Carroll
My father was in the Air Force, he used that opportunity to raise me over seas. We lived in Italy, Netherlands and Germany and were always stationed off base, which exposed me to the European way of life. The local cultures and the old world traditions of the towns influenced me a great deal and that’s when I started to become aware of the unique history and the art of the areas where we lived; which influenced me a great deal.
Moving back to the states I eventually learned about antiques while working for an antique auction house in Reno, NV. I worked closely with the appraiser and started to learn about art from 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. One of my other responsibilities was setting up a 6,000 square foot building for shows and auctions every month, this taught me the value of display.
I then moved to the Palm Springs area where I transitioned from antiques to the fine arts. I started work with a gallery in Palm Desert as an art director. This opportunity introduced me to interior designers, professional artists and a clientele that work in the fine arts; it was a new and exciting world. I worked side by side with designers which developed my eye for art installation and art placement. I also worked directly with the artists. One artist in particular introduced me to the field of ceramics. After years of working in the gallery scene and practicing art on the side, I transitioned into being an artist full time.
My wife Courtney, our two children and I moved to the Salt Lake area in 2017. I continued my pursuit in the arts by opening the JOCO Gallery. I continue to build sculpture, meanwhile networking with local designers and architects. I also travel participate in juried art festivals. The name JOCO was conceived by merging the first two letters of our names, John and Courtney creating the JOCO Gallery.
